Currency exchange

Where can I change my currency?
Currency exchange in Lithuania can be carried out in bank branches. There are no specialized points of purchase and sale of currency in the country as such.
Banks are closed on weekends, but the exchange can be made in large shopping centers, at the railway and bus stations, at the Vilnius airport.

Opening hours
Banks are usually open from 9:00 to 17:00 from Monday to Friday.
Exchange offices of Medicinos bankas work from 06.00 to 22.00 seven days a week.
Exchange offices at the airport do not close until 01.00 am.

Commission
For exchanging, the bank takes a commission for the operation in the amount of 0.30-1.00 euros. If you are changing a large amount of money (several thousand euros), it makes sense to ask the cashier for special exchange rates.

ATM

ATMs are located in bank branches, shopping centers, train stations and airports.

Commission
Cash withdrawal fees in Lithuania – from 0% to 1.5%

Useful tips

What currency should I take with me?
It is better for a tourist to travel to Lithuania with the euro. In all major cities it is possible to pay by card, but cash is also accepted quite readily.

Is it profitable to cash and change money at the airport?
The exchange rate at the airport is not the most profitable. But if you do not have a bank card, then you need to exchange cash for at least your transfer. If it is a holiday or a day off, it is worth exchanging even more, since banks in the city may not work at this time.

How to pay in hotels, shops, restaurants, taxis?
The country accepts both cash and bank cards. Credit cards are accepted in the overwhelming majority of shops, hotels and travel agencies in large cities (in the provinces they are still less common, but recently, more and more institutions accept them for payment in small towns).

Other
Import and export of local and foreign currency is not limited. Citizens, whose countries are not part of the European Union, must necessarily declare amounts over 10,000 euros upon entry and exit.

В случае если вы заболели во время путешествия
  1. Call the assistance company, which is a partner of your insurance company. Contacts can be found in the insurance policy.
  2. Provide all the necessary information regarding the insured event and the symptoms with which the illness proceeds.
  3. The representative of the assistance company will find a suitable medical institution where you should go. If the clinic is far from your place of stay, ask what type of transport you can use and whether the trip will be paid for by the insurance company later. For payment, keep all documents proving your transportation costs to the medical facility. These documents must reflect the cost and route (if possible).
  4. Upon arrival at the medical facility, do not pay for any services other than those agreed with the assistance company. Do not leave any important documents at registration.
  5. Keep all documents that prove the costs of purchased drugs.
  6. Do not contact medical institutions (individual doctors) before receiving approval from the assistance company. You will have to pay for such requests yourself and there is a high risk that these costs will not be reimbursed by the insurance company in the future.

  1. Contact the local police as soon as possible, where you will be given a temporary ID. Ask to certify two copies: show one at the embassy, and the second will be useful at home when you restore your passport.
  2. Call the embassy, clarify what documents will be required to restore your identity card, and the time of reception.
    Usually this:
    – two photos;
    – an identity document (civil passport, its certified copy, driver’s license, hunting ticket or any document with your name, photo and seal);
    – if any, electronic copies of the international passport and the general civil passport;
  3. Go to the embassy. If everything is in order with the documents, a certificate of the right to return to your homeland will be issued to you on the same day within a few hours, and you will present it at the airport at passport control on your way home. Keep in mind that this certificate is valid for 14 days, so if you came for a long vacation and lost your passport on the very first day, it is worth doing the restoration no earlier than 2 weeks before departure.

Public Transport

Lithuania has a great transport infrastructure. Their roads are well maintained and safe, with some exceptions in rural areas. Public transport in Lithuania is also great and inexpensive, with many ways to travel around the country. Furthermore, there are many apps that can enhance your travel experience in the country. For example, Traffi is a very useful mobile app that shows all public transport routes and schedules in the major Lithuanian cities.

Road traffic is on the right side.

Trains

Trains and railways in Lithuania are in a good condition. Trains are comfortable, reliable and safe. There is a good amount of routes available in Lithuania, but most railways concentrate around major cities like Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda. Some smaller cities and towns are reachable by train, but those routes are not as fast and not very frequent. Popular routes in the country have a first and second class wagons, less popular ones only have second or even third class. Trains are comparable to buses and whichever option is better depends on the route. Tickets can be bought online, at the train stations or from a conductor (for an additional fee). All trains in Lithuania are operated by Lithunian Rail, go to their website fore more information: https://www.litrail.lt/en/home

Bus

Buses are popular and widespread in Lithuania. There are many intercity routes, with buses also going to other European countries. Buses are often fast, modern and comfortable, though in rural areas some of them can be quite old. They are more widespread than trains, even the most remote areas have some buses running there. Tickets can be bought at bus stations, online or from drivers. Bigger cities like Vilnius and Kaunas have their own bus and trolleybus systems. For city buses, tickets can be bought at various kiosks near bus stops or from the drivers. Mobile app Traffi is very useful for tracking routes and schedules of city buses. There are many companies operating buses in the country, but there is a comprehensive site, where you can find all information regarding buses: https://www.autobusubilietai.lt/en

Taxi

You can find taxis in many Lithuanian cities. They are clearly marked and metered. For tourists, taxis can a bit unreliable and drivers may try to scam you, so you do need to be careful. This can be especially apparent when you want to take a taxi from an airport. The best ways to order a taxi is via an app like eTaksi, by phone or ask a hotel to call it for you, this way you can get the best service. Uber only operates in Vilnius, but an Estonian service called Bolt that functions similarly operates in many bigger cities.

Car rental

If you want to travel on your own accord, renting a car is the best way to do so. Car rentals are often found in major cities or at the airports. Roads in Lithuania are safe, well lit and in a good condition. Some rural roads can be poorer and harder to navigate, but it’s not a very big problem. During winter, snow is cleared quickly and ice is not usually an issue. In cities rush hours are usually short and parking space is easy to find. Old towns in cities like Vilnius and Kaunas can be tricky to navigate by car. Rental services like Citybee (https://www.citybee.lt/en) are also found in many cities.

Bikes

Biking in Lithuania is constantly improving. Bike rental services can be found in major Lithuanian cities and many popular tourist destinations. Cities also have bike paths, though they are sometimes underdeveloped and people might walk over those paths. Driving on the road is usually safe, but awareness and caution is advised. Lithuania is a flat country, so it’s not hard to get around with a bike even if there aren’t many bike paths or roads. Most trains and ferries allow you to bring your bike with you but only certain buses, mostly operated by Kautra, allow this.

The best places to stay with children

The area around the Curonian Lagoon is perfect for resting with babies. The water in the bay is several degrees warmer than in the open Baltic Sea and is almost always calm.
In addition, the coast is quite shallow. Nida and Neringa are the most popular family resorts on the Curonian Spit.
For older children, rest in Palanga, where there is a lot of entertainment, is suitable.

During the winter holidays, you can visit Vilnius, Kaunas, Trakai and other cities of Lithuania, see the sights of the cities and enjoy the views of the streets decorated for the holidays.
If you want to go skiing, then it is better to go to Ignalina or Birshton. Thanks to the gentle slope, these resorts are perfect for beginners and toddlers.

What to take with you?
